About the Anthology

Many people have stories to tell about the infamous 2015 Butte Fire in Calaveras County. We are hoping this opening publication will help heal some of the pain and will inspire others to come forward and share their unique story and poem, photographs, or other remembrances of the fire. The web site will be dedicated to these stories.

We would also like to link to others’ stories, articles, websites, and Facebook accounts as a receptacle or repository of the historic event and its impact. We’d like stories from firefighters, law enforcement, children, evacuees, those who lost their homes, those who still have their homes but lost their vista, recovery workers and volunteers, and everyone who has a story or photo to share.

The web pages devoted to the fire will be a good resource for others who go through such a hardship and have an opportunity to find out how others coped and adapted.

MWP launched Out of the Fire anthology on Saturday, June 17, in conjunction with the Afternoon with Poet Laureate Dana Gioia Event – 12-4 PM at the Angels Camp Museum — the event was Free. Contributors read powerful selections from the book and photographers had spectacular prints for sale. Refreshments were served and no-host wine by the glass, donated by Ironstone Vineyards.  Dana Gioia was moved by the readings from those who had experienced the devastating event offering some wise recollections and insights to offer. Books will be distributed throughout Calaveras County. Cost is $20. They can be purchased directly from us and proceeds will go toward the website.

Thanks to all the contributors and sponsors who made this possible.
